Us with God

An almanac for the soul

Any season · When the Formula Stops Working · Any season

You’ve managed everything. You were never meant to manage alone.

Wisdom is a gift. It was never meant to replace the One who gives it.

You did the things. Planned, saved, prayed, raised the kids right, worked the system. Then the system broke. A layoff email. A diagnosis. A child who walked away. The spreadsheet has no cell for this. If you’re holding a formula that stopped working, you’re in honest company.

What’s true hereGod built wisdom and order into the world. By wisdom he laid the earth’s foundations (Prov 3:19), and Proverbs is in the Bible for good reason. Planning and diligence are gifts.

Fellow travelers

We aren’t the first to walk this way.

  • Adam and Eve heard the oldest sales pitch: “You will be like God” (Gen 3:5). Knowledge, without the One who knows.
  • The builders of Babel wanted a tower to the heavens and a name for themselves (Gen 11:4).
  • Job’s friends had a tidy formula: the innocent never perish (Job 4:7). God said they had not spoken rightly about him (Job 42:7).
  • The Teacher optimized everything under the sun and called it “chasing after the wind” (Eccl 2:11).
  • The rich fool had a flawless plan for bigger barns and no room in it for God (Luke 12:16–21).

God never gave Job an explanation; he gave Job himself (Job 42:5).

Where the Shepherd meets us

The destination of every season is the same: God himself.

  • “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain” (Ps 127:1–2). He builds, and he gives sleep to those he loves.
  • “I have calmed and quieted myself,” like a weaned child with its mother (Ps 131:2). That quiet is learned with him, one day at a time.
  • “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Prov 3:5–6). Faith means trusting him with what we can’t control.
For the road

Name one outcome you’re white-knuckling. Write it down. Then open your hands, palms up, and pray Psalm 131 over it slowly. Do it again tomorrow. Open hands take practice.

Keep walking
