Us with God

An almanac for the soul

Any season · Your Dreams · Any season

What if God’s best gift is God?

The good things you want really are gifts. They were never meant to be the treasure.

Maybe you got some of the dream. The job, the house, the relationship, the kids. And the ache stayed anyway. Or maybe you didn’t get it, and some nights you wonder whether God is holding out on you. Either way it’s an honest question, and Scripture is full of people who asked it.

What’s true hereGod is generous. Jesus said the Father loves to give good gifts to his children (Matt 7:11), and every good gift comes from him (James 1:17). Wanting good things is part of being his.

Fellow travelers

We aren’t the first to walk this way.

  • The younger son said “give me my share” and left with the gifts (Luke 15:12). Even on the road home he rehearsed a speech asking to be a hired hand (Luke 15:19).
  • Israel had manna every morning and still craved meat. God gave them what they asked for, and it left them wasting away (Num 11:4–6, Ps 106:15).
  • The crowds chased Jesus for more bread. He offered them himself: “I am the bread of life” (John 6:26, John 6:35).
  • Jacob woke at Bethel and tried to strike a deal: if God provided, then the Lord would be his God (Gen 28:20–21). God had just promised, “I am with you” (Gen 28:15).

The father’s real gift to the younger son wasn’t the robe or the ring; it was the embrace (Luke 15:20).

Where the Shepherd meets us

The destination of every season is the same: God himself.

  • “Earth has nothing I desire besides you,” Asaph prays, and God becomes his portion forever (Ps 73:25–26).
  • “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Ps 37:4). When he becomes the delight, he becomes the desire.
  • Paul learned to be content in plenty and in want. His “I can do all this” is about contentment in Christ (Phil 4:11–13).
  • “In your presence there is fullness of joy” (Ps 16:11). The gifts are good. The Giver is the joy.
For the road

Turn your wish list into a thank-you list. List the good things you already have. Then add one last line at the bottom: “And you.”

Keep walking
