The church year · Ordinary Time · The long green season from late spring to late fall
Nothing special is happening. That’s where he likes to walk with you.
After the big feasts comes the longest stretch of the church year. Ordinary Time is about the most of life: work, meals, laundry, rest, and God with us in all of it.
No holiday to plan for, no big thing on the horizon. Just the commute, the dishes, the same faces, the same Tuesday. You catch yourself thinking real life will start after the next raise, the next vacation, the next season. If plain days feel like waiting for something better, you’re not alone.
What’s true hereGod is generous, and longing for good things is not wrong. The bend comes when we live for the next gift and miss the Giver who is here today.
Fellow travelers
We aren’t the first to walk this way.
- Enoch has one of the shortest stories in the Bible. He simply “walked with God” (Gen 5:24).
- Jesus spent most of his life in a small town as a carpenter (Mark 6:3). Those quiet years were holy too.
- Ruth went out to glean leftover grain in someone else’s field. That ordinary day led straight into God’s story (Ruth 2:2–3).
- The risen Jesus cooked fish on the beach and said, “Come and have breakfast” (John 21:9–12).
Most of our life with God happens on days nobody will remember.
Where the Shepherd meets us
The destination of every season is the same: God himself.
- “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” (Col 3:23). Your spreadsheet and your sink both count.
- Whether we eat or drink or whatever we do, we can “do it all for the glory of God” (1 Cor 10:31).
- The Shepherd “makes me lie down in green pastures” (Ps 23:2). Green is the color of this season for a reason.
- Paul learned the secret of being content in any situation (Phil 4:11–13). Contentment is what it feels like to find God already in the room.
Choose one chore you do every day, like washing dishes or the drive to work. Do it slowly this week and talk to God the whole time, as plainly as you’d talk to a friend beside you.
