Us with Godand Rest
Forecast: high pressure all week, with a quiet meadow just off the trail.
Four tired ways to walk
Each has some truth in it. None of them is the whole story.
Under GodSheep that hide from the Shepherd
Rest is a rule I keep so God won’t be disappointed in me.
Over GodSheep that know the way
Rest is a productivity hack. Recover well so I can perform better.
From GodSheep that follow the grass
I’ve earned this. Rest is the reward I’m owed.
For GodSheep trying to be the sheepdog
Rest is for the weak. There’s too much kingdom work to stop.
Rest is trust, and time to delight in the One who keeps the world running.
Jesus said the Sabbath was made for us, as a gift (Mark 2:27). When his friends were too busy to eat, he said, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest” (Mark 6:31). He gives sleep to those he loves (Ps 127:2). Rest is how we practice believing that he is God and we are not. We stop, and the world keeps turning in his hands.
Where the Shepherd isHe is the one who makes us lie down in green pastures (Ps 23:2). Sometimes he has to insist.
Pick one hour this week to do nothing useful, and spend it noticing him.
Lord, can I trust you to hold things together while I sleep?
Fellow travelers
People in Scripture who walked this ground before us.
- Elijah collapsed under a broom tree, and God gave him sleep and bread before he gave him anything else to do (1 Kings 19:4–8).
- Israel in the wilderness found twice the manna on the sixth day, so they could stop on the seventh (Ex 16:22–30).
