Any season · Grief · Any season
When God didn’t give you what you asked, he didn’t leave.
Scripture’s most repeated answer to suffering isn’t an explanation. It’s a presence.
You prayed. Others prayed. People you trust said they believed God would do it. And it didn’t happen. Now the church language that used to comfort you feels thin, and you’re not sure what to say to God. You’re welcome here as you are. More psalms are laments than any other kind, so your sorrow already has a place in Scripture.
Fellow travelers
We aren’t the first to walk this way.
- Martha and Mary each said it: “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Jesus didn’t argue. He wept (John 11:21, John 11:32, John 11:35).
- Paul begged three times for his thorn to be taken away. It stayed, and so did God: “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Cor 12:8–9).
- Jesus himself asked for the cup to pass from him, and it did not (Matt 26:39). Our unanswered prayers have a companion.
- Three young men told a king that God could save them, “but even if he does not,” they would trust him. In the fire, a fourth figure walked with them (Dan 3:18, Dan 3:25).
In the green pastures David talks about God, and in the dark valley he starts talking to him: “You are with me” (Ps 23:4).
Where the Shepherd meets us
The destination of every season is the same: God himself.
- “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (Isa 43:2). He doesn’t promise there will be no waters. He promises himself.
- Neither death nor life, nor anything else in all creation, can separate us from the love of God in Christ (Rom 8:38–39).
- One day God will dwell with his people and wipe every tear from their eyes (Rev 21:3–4). The story ends with him, and with us.
Write your own lament in the shape of Psalm 13. Start with “How long?” and say all of it. Then ask, “Please answer me.” End, if you can, with “Yet I will trust,” even in a whisper. If you can’t get there yet, that’s okay. He’s with you there too.
