Us with God

An almanac for the soul

The civil year · Graduation · May and June

God’s will isn’t a hidden map. It’s a walk with him.

You’re not hunting for the one right door. You’re learning to follow the One who goes on ahead of you (John 10:4).

The cap and gown are on a hanger and everyone is asking the same question. What’s next? Maybe you have an answer and it scares you. Maybe you have three answers, or none, and it feels like your whole life hinges on picking right. You’re in good company. God’s people have stood at this edge for a very long time.

Four tired ways through Graduation

Which one sounds like you this year?

Under GodSheep that hide from the ShepherdIf I pick wrong, I’m out of God’s will for good.
Over GodSheep that know the wayI’ll run the spreadsheet and ask God to sign off.
From GodSheep that follow the grassGod, just open the door to the dream job.
For GodSheep trying to be the sheepdogWhatever has the most impact must be right.

Fellow travelers

We aren’t the first to walk this way.

  • Abraham got a direction instead of a map. God said go “to the land I will show you,” and he went without knowing where (Gen 12:1, Heb 11:8).
  • Israel in the wilderness packed up when the cloud lifted and camped when it settled, sometimes for a night, sometimes for a year (Num 9:17–23).
  • Paul ran into closed door after closed door, until a vision of a man from Macedonia showed him where to go next (Acts 16:6–10).

The question shifts from “Where should I go?” to “Who am I going with?”, because Jesus’ call was simply “Follow me” (Mark 1:17).

Where the Shepherd meets us

The destination of every season is the same: God himself.

  • God promises guidance that is personal: “I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Ps 32:8).
  • Moses cared more about company than coordinates. “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here” (Ex 33:15).
  • The Shepherd doesn’t mail directions from far away. He goes on ahead of his sheep, and they follow because they know his voice (John 10:4).
For the road

Write your options down. Pray over each one with a single question: “Can I do this with you?” Notice which ones you can picture him in. Then take the next step, and trust him with the one after it. Decisions has more for the road.

Keep walking
