The church year · Epiphany · January 6, and the weeks after
You don’t need the whole map. He shows up for people who come looking.
Epiphany means “showing.” It remembers the night God revealed himself to outsiders who followed a star (Matt 2:1–12), and the day heaven opened over Jesus’ baptism (Matt 3:16–17).
A new year has started and you have a decision in front of you. School, a job, a move, a relationship. You keep asking God for a clear sign and getting what feels like fog. Here’s some company. The first people to find Jesus after the shepherds were foreigners with a star, a guess, and a long walk.
What’s true hereGod really does guide his people, and asking him is right. The bend comes when we want a plan more than we want him, and treat guidance as a code to crack before we’ll take a step.
Fellow travelers
We aren’t the first to walk this way.
- The magi didn’t know the Scriptures or the way. They followed what light they had, asked for directions, and found the child (Matt 2:1–12).
- Samuel heard his name in the night three times before he knew who was calling. Then he said, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Sam 3:1–10).
- Nathanael doubted anything good could come from Nazareth. Philip didn’t argue. He said, “Come and see” (John 1:45–49).
- Nicodemus came to Jesus at night with careful questions. Jesus welcomed him anyway (John 3:1–2).
The star led the magi to a person, and he is the guidance we were looking for.
Where the Shepherd meets us
The destination of every season is the same: God himself.
- God’s light was always meant for everyone: “Nations will come to your light” (Isa 60:1–3).
- At the Jordan the Father spoke over his Son, “with him I am well pleased,” before Jesus had preached a sermon (Matt 3:16–17). That’s the voice we follow.
- “I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” (Ps 32:8). Guidance comes from a Shepherd who stays close, more than from a map.
- Jesus is the light of the world, and his followers won’t walk in darkness (John 8:12).
Write your decision on a card. Each morning this week, hold it and pray, “I want you more than the answer.” Then take the next small step you can see.
